Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss in South Africa
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve. It is often associated with elevated intraocular pressure. This condition can develop slowly, showing few symptoms until significant vision loss has occurred, making early detection and regular eye exams crucial. Without timely intervention, glaucoma can lead to peripheral vision loss and eventually total blindness. Understanding the risk factors, symptoms, and treatment options is essential for preserving vision and maintaining eye health.
Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty
A cost-effective alternative to eye drops
Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a minimally invasive laser procedure used to treat open-angle glaucoma by reducing intraocular pressure. By targeting specific cells in the eye's drainage system, SLT enhances fluid outflow, effectively lowering pressure without damaging surrounding tissues. This treatment is often recommended as an initial therapy or for patients who have open-angle glaucoma. SLT offers a quick recovery, minimal discomfort and can be repeated if necessary, making it a valuable option in glaucoma management.

How to instill eye drops
Instilling eye drops correctly is essential for effectively managing various eye conditions, including Glaucoma. To properly administer eye drops, start by washing your hands thoroughly to avoid introducing bacteria into your eyes. Tilt your head back slightly and look upward. Gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket, then hold the dropper above the eye without touching it to prevent contamination. Squeeze the prescribed number of drops into the pocket and close your eyes for a few moments to allow the drops to spread evenly. Finally, gently press on the inner corner of your eye to prevent the drops from draining into your tear duct.
